Rohit Sharma being backed for T20 World Cup captaincy, Fate of Virat Kohli uncertain

The dust has barely settled on the ODI World Cup, but the focus for most teams is already shifting to the upcoming T20 World Cup. The tournament will be held in the United States and the West Indies in June, and India is already preparing for the event. A few days after the ODI final, India kicked off their preparations with a 5-match T20I series against Australia, winning 4-1. Their next challenge will be a 3-match series against South Africa in South Africa’s home turf.
The upcoming T20 World Cup has a big question mark hanging over it for Indian cricket fans: will veteran players Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma be included in the squad? Both haven’t donned the blue jersey in the shortest format since the T20 World Cup in Australia over a year ago. Following that tournament, they were given rest for T20s, with the focus shifting to the ODI format and the subsequent World Cup.
Thee is no clarity as to whether Kohli and Rohit will be a part of the upcoming T20 World Cup.
However, with the T20 World Cup fast approaching, their inclusion remains uncertain. Their absence from the recent Australia T20s and the upcoming series against South Africa was based on their requests, citing fatigue after the gruelling World Cup campaign.
With only three T20Is remaining against Afghanistan before the World Cup, whether veteran players Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma will be included in the Indian squad remains unanswered. Their return remains shrouded in uncertainty.
Rohit Sharma to return to T20I Cricket?
In a recent development, the Indian Cricket Board’s officials met with Rohit Sharma, conveying their desire for him to lead Team India in the upcoming T20 World Cup. However, the same level of support seems absent for Virat Kohli. Reports suggest that the board favours aggressive players like Ishan Kishan over Kohli, and discussions regarding his future in the format are expected soon.
Fans are not too happy with the development as Kohli has been in a rich vein of form recently. He was the Player-of-the-Tournament in the recent concluded World Cup and was India’s highest run-scorer in last year’s T20 World Cup. He was also in marvellous form in this year’s edition of the Indian Premier League. It remains to be seen if Kohli will have another shot at T20 glory.
