In the 44th game of the ongoing ODI World Cup 2023, Pakistan and England played each other at Eden Gardens, Kolkata. Ahead of the game, both teams had only one thing to play for, i.e. pride. While the defending champions crashed out of the semis race, they were playing for the Champions Trophy 2025 qualification. On the other hand, the Asian side had a slight chance of qualifying for the semis.
For that to happen, their best chance was to bat first and take a chance with the bat and ball, albeit the task was big. For the unversed, they needed to win the game by 287 runs. However, at the toss, the England skipper Jos Buttler decided to bat first on a turning wicket. This was pretty much it for the Pakistan team.
Batting first, the current World Champions had a great start with Dawid Malan and Jonny Bairstow putting together 82 runs for the first wicket. The latter went on to score his first fifty of the tournament. At 108/2, the likes of Joe Root and Ben Stokes added 132 runs for the fourth wicket. Both batters scored a fifty. Apart from them, the likes of Buttler, Harry Brook, and David Willey played cameos and helped the team reach a daunting 337/9.
The 1992 winners needed to chase down the target in just 6.4 overs. Even if they hit the first 40 balls for a six every ball, they would have reached 240/0, falling short by 97 runs. This wouldn’t have taken place in all seriousness. After losing two early wickets inside the powerplay, their pursuit of even winning the game has gotten in the wrong direction.
At the end of 6.4 overs, the former champions were 30/2 with skipper Babar Azam and wicketkeeper batter Mohammad Rizwan batting at the crease. With this, New Zealand has officially qualified as the fourth team to play the first semifinal against table-toppers, India.
