The sixteenth season of the Indian Premier League (IPL) saw one last round of action as Chennai Super Kings (CSK) and Gujarat Titans (GT) squared off. Due to the ongoing rain in Ahmedabad, the game that was originally scheduled for Sunday, May 28, had to be moved to Monday, May 29, the reserve day. While GT aims to become the third team to win consecutive IPL championships, CSK is pursuing a record-equaling fifth crown.

On a pitch that has historically benefited batting, CSK skipper MS Dhoni decided to bowl first after winning the toss in his 250th IPL game and 10th final as captain of CSK. Gujarat Titans enthusiastically accepted the offer to bat first, finishing their 20 overs at 214/4. Shubman Gill, the top batter for GT, had the opportunity to become only the second player in IPL history to score more than 900 runs in a single season.

However, Gill couldn’t influence the final, scoring just 39 off 20 balls. Wriddhiman Saha and Sai Sudarshan continued in the same direction after Gill was dismissed. Saha lost his wicket in the 14th over after scoring 54 runs off 39 balls. Sai Sudharshan and Hardik Pandya led the last mayhem to end the innings. Sai Sudharshan had to leave the pitch for 96 off 47 balls in the third ball of the last over, almost missing out on his century. The young batter from Tamil Nadu scored eight boundaries and 6 maximums in his knock, scoring runs at the strike rate of 204.26.

Rashid Khan had little power to change the outcome of the score, which was a two-ball duck on the last ball of the innings. Hardik Pandya too made a vital contribution, scoring 21 runs off of 12 balls. For CSK, Matheesha Pathirana came back with two wickets while conceding 44 runs in his four overs. Ravindra Jadeja and Deepak Chahar returned with one scalp apiece from the season finale.
