India took on Sri Lanka in the third ODI at Thiruvananthapuram. India were provided with a great start by Shubman Gill and Rohit Sharma. Gill scored 116 off 97 balls. He hit 14 fours and two sixes. After Rohit departed, it was a Virat Kohli show. He has scored an unbeaten 166 off 110 balls with 13 fours and eight sixes. He had earlier scored his 45th ODI hundred at Guwahati in this series against Sri Lanka.
Kohli did not play the anchoring role in the third ODI as he scored at a quick rate and continued to pile on the pressure against the Sri Lankans. This was his 46th hundred in ODIs. When he got to the landmark, there was very subdued celebrations, which was unlike Kohli. The 35-year-old, when he smashed his 46th hundred against the Islanders, became three short of matching Sachin Tendulkar’s tally of 49 ODI hundreds.
He took his time and later tore the Sri Lankan bowlers to shreds by hitting big sixes against them. In the first ODI, he played the role of an anchor, opposite to this match. He became the first Indian to score the most number of hundreds against Sri Lanka, with 10. He also scored 20 hundreds in a country, which was the most number of centuries by an international player at one single venue, which, in this case, is India.
The Delhi-born batter had batted a poor vein of form coming into the Asia Cup in 2022. But things changed for him from there. He scored his maiden T20 Hundred against Afghanistan in India’s last Asia Cup game. His innings consisted of 122 off 61 balls. He was also the second-highest run scorer in the tournament. The former Indian captain carried the rich vein of form into the 20-20 World Cup.
He was India’s best batter in the 20-20 World Cup. At the World event in Australia, he played one of his best T20 knocks against Pakistan, which was an unbeaten 82 off 53 balls, which gave India a four-wicket win over the arch-rivals. He scored 296 runs at an average of 98.66 and at a strike rate of 136.40. He also scored four half-centuries in the tournament.
