After winning the first Test comfortably, India and Bangladesh locked horns in the second Test at Shere Bangla National Stadium, Dhaka. Bangladesh captain Shakib Al Hasan won the toss and elected to bat first. Openers Najmul Hossain Shanto and Zakir Hasan gave a steady start to their team on the pitch that offered good bounce to seamers. They added 37 runs for the first wicket before Jaydev Unadkat dismissed Zakir Hasan and picked his first Test wicket in his second Test which he was playing after 12 years gap.
The fall of Hasan brought Mominul Haque to the crease who looked determined to take his team to a good score. The southpaw started his innings cautiously and assessed the pitch. Bangladesh lost their second wicket as Shanto was trapped in front of the stumps by Ravichandran Ashwin which brought captain Shakib Al Hasan to the crease.
While Mominul played the waiting game, Shakib Al Hasan began attacking the Indian spinners to keep the scoreboard moving. Mominul looked pretty confident at the crease as he kept on finding occasional boundaries. Bangladesh finished on 82/2 at lunch with Mominul on 23.
Bangladesh had a big blow on the first ball of the second session as they lost Shakib Al Hasan ending the 43-run stand for the third wicket. At the other end, Mominul continued his innings and gave good support to the new batters walking in. He was involved in a 48-run stand with Mushfiqur Rahim for the fourth wicket and a 42-run stand with Litton Das for the fifth wicket.
While other batters failed to convert their starts, Mominul kept holding one end and gradually built his innings. He brought up his half-century after 13 innings in the second session. Bangladesh finished the second session on 184/5 with Mominul unbeaten on 65 and Mehidy Hasan on 5.
It looked like they would easily reach the total of 300 in the first innings. However, Bangladesh suffered a dramatic collapse in the third session and went from 213/5 to 227 all out courtesy of lethal bowling by Umesh Yadav. Yadav finished with figures of 4/25 in four overs while Ashwin also picked up 4 wickets for 71 runs and Unadkat picked up two wickets.
Indian openers KL Rahul and Shubman Gill weathered the early storm and finished Day 1 on 19/0. Here’s how Twitter reacted to the action on Day 1:

Agreed..Unadkat must be included inplace of Axar Patel..Not Kuldeep..He not only had taken 5 wickets haul but scored very crucial runs. No reason can justify his exclusion..#BadDecisions #BANvsIND

#kuldeepyadav seriously dropping Man of Match in next game. Was he really the most underperforming spinner/batsmen?
