This rule has already lost New Zealand a World Cup final. England were awarded 6 runs on the third last ball of the innings when the ball deflected off of Ben Stokes’s bat and went to the boundary.

The cricket rule states, “If the boundary results from an overthrow or from the wilful act of a fielder, the runs scored shall be any runs for penalties awarded to either side, and the allowance for the boundary, and the runs completed by the batsmen, together with the run in progress if they had already crossed at the instant of the throw or act.” In accordance with the law, England should have been awarded 5 runs as the ball hit Stokes’s bat before he completed the second run.

Many however are of the opinion that a ball deflected off of a runner’s bat is entirely due to the batter’s fault and the fielding team should not be penalised at all. Despite the 2019 World Cup fiasco, this controversial cricket rule still continues to
