‘3rd umpire CSK ke sath hai’ – Fans lash out as Third umpire wrongly turns down DRS stating spike from Devon Conway’s bat
Chennai Super Kings is hosting Delhi Capitals in the 55th match of the Indian Premier League 2023 at the Chepauk Stadium. While the Capitals are looking for a win to stay alive in the race to playoffs, the Super Kings are looking to keep their momentum alive.
Winning the toss, CSK surprisingly opted to bat first on a slow wicket. Batting first, Ruturaj Gaikwad gave them a fly start with some early boundaries. On the other hand, Devon Conway, the other CSK opener, was struggling to get going.
He survived a few chances, including a bizarre DRS call. The batter knelt down to sweep it in the fourth over of the first inning but missed the line against Lalit Yadav. The on-field umpire examined it carefully but denied the appeal.
The Capitals immediately took the review, and while it looked to be out, the 3rd umpire stayed with the decision of the on-field umpire. He incorrectly asserted that the spike came from Conway’s bat, when there appeared to be no bat involved. The fans were angry at the poor umpiring decision during the match.
As it turns out, Conway did not last long as he was dismissed in the next over by Axar Patel. Axar produced a fuller delivery on the first ball, and Conway attempted but failed to complete the slog sweep. Conway felt he would hit in line when the ball angled in. Although the umpire did not declare him out, DC requested another review and was successful this time.
There are chances of this wicket slowing down: MS Dhoni
Earlier, after winning the toss, the CSK skipper MS Dhoni stated that the wicket might slow down in the later stage of the game. “We have played a few games on this wicket. There are chances of this wicket slowing down. We can’t complain about this track. We try to keep it simple. We try to keep reiterating the same thing. Try to accomplish your plan. Try to execute your plans,” he said.
